Explanation and meaning of technical terms in a mutual fund factsheet : EXPENSE RATIO, PORTFOLIO TURNOVER, STANDARD DEVIATION, SHARPE RATIO and BETA
EXPENSE RATIO
This is what investors pay the fund house for managing their funds. It includes the cost for managing and operating the fund, besides the administrative and sales expenses. While equity funds can charge an expense ratio up to 2.5 per cent, debt funds can charge up to 2.25 per cent. Say, if you have invested Rs 10,000 in a fund with an expense ratio of 1.5 per cent, you will be paying the fund house Rs 150 annually to manage your investment. A higher expense ratio will mean lower returns as it is deducted every year. The net asset value (NAV) of a fund is calculated after considering its total expenses.

PORTFOLIO TURNOVER
This measures the frequency with which a fund house buys and sells stocks. If it does so frequently, it will incur higher transaction costs. This will, in turn, impact the returns since higher costs mean lower returns for the investor. Portfolio turnover is calculated by taking the total number of new scrips bought or sold (which ever is lesser) and dividing it by the total NAV of the fund.

STANDARD DEVIATION
The standard deviation of a fund tells us how much its returns have deviated from expectations, based on its historical performance. It measures the volatility and, hence, the risk. The higher the standard deviation, the greater will be the volatility of the returns. So, if the standard deviation is 50 per cent annually, the fund's returns can go up or down by 50 per cent from its average returns. These values are updated on a monthly basis.

SHARPE RATIO
This is used to compare a fund's risk-adjusted returns, per unit of the risk assumed. Simply put, it informs us if the returns are due to good investment decisions or the risk taken. The higher the sharpe ratio, the better the fund’s historical risk-adjusted performance. You can compare the sharpe ratio of your fund with the benchmark index.

BETA
This compares the fund’s volatility with that of its benchmark. It gives us a sense of how much one can expect it to fall or rise when the market moves down or up. Typically, if a fund’s beta is higher than 1, it is more volatile than the market. For example, if it is 0.5, the fund can outperform the market up to 50 per cent in a rising market. In a falling market, the fund is likely to underperform the market up to 50 per cent. That is, it has a history of fluctuating by 50 per cent.

The university has distributed dummy copies of the first page of the computerized answer sheet along with admit card to the students well in advance to avoid any last-minute trouble at the examination hall.
Although college authorities fear that the students from rural background may not be able to fill the required information on the computerized first page of the answer books, the university has made elaborate arrangement to ensure that everything passes off peacefully.
The university has distributed dummy copies of the first page of the computerized answer sheet along with admit card to the students well in advance to avoid any last-minute trouble at the examination hall.
Vice-chancellor R N Bhagat said teachers of all the colleges have been directed to guide students in filling up the computerized sheet. "Since for the first time such answer sheets are being used, examinees would be given additional 15 minutes to fill it correctly," he added.
Computerized answer sheets are regularly used for different competitive examinations where no one is present to guide the students. Using computerized sheet at university exam would also help students prepare for the competitive tests in a better fashion, he added.
According to Bhagat, the computerized answer sheet has more safety measures than earlier answer sheets. "Now, answer books would be sent to examiners only after coding and result would be published after decoding them," he added.
This would also help in completing the tabulation work in less time as compared to earlier methods and publish the results speedily, says an expert. The VC said the university is determined to regularize the delayed session of the university and is trying its best to adhere to the academic calendar circulated earlier.

The Chennai region has topped the rest of the country in pass percentage with 91.32% in the Central Board of Secondary Education's CBSE class 12 board exams this year 2011
Releasing the Class XII results on Monday, CBSE said 91.32% of students who took the exam in the region had passed, well above the national average of 81.71%.
The region, which scored over the national average on almost all parameters, however, saw a dip when compared to the performance in 2010. The pass percentage saw a dip from last year as did the individual pass percentages of boys and girls.
CBSE does not release the list of top rankers nor the top marks. In Chennai, at least five students notched aggregate scores of 487 and above. Among the high scorers were S Divya of Modern Senior Secondary School in Nanganallur with 98.4% and K A Sumana of PS Senior Secondary School in Mylapore with 98.2%.
School heads said that while there didn't seem to be much change in the number of centums in maths from last year, the number of centums in physics had gone down. Students had said earlier that physics exam was tough.
While there has been a 1.84% increase in the overall pass percentage as compared to last year, there has been a 0.85% decrease in the pass rate in the Chennai region from last year's 92.17%. Only 89.79% of boys who took the exam this year cleared it against 90.5% last year. Among girls, this year's pass percentage was 0.56% lower than last year's 93.77%. This is still higher than the nationwide pass percentage — 77.83% for boys and 86.93% for girls.
The regional average seems to have dipped because of the poor show by private candidates, of whom a mere 43.16% passed. Last year, the average was 45.4%.
In all other categories, the regional figures were better than the national average. The pass percentage of students in Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in the region is higher than national average, with 94.73% of KV students and 98.32% of JNV students successful.
Among those in independent schools (92.51%) too, the pass percentage was higher than the national average of 81.63%.
The pass percentage has been fluctuating in the last five years. The Chennai region recorded a 16-year high in the All-India Senior Secondary Certificate Examination in 2010. In 1995, when the success rate was nearly as high only 19,479 students appeared for the exam.
The number of students in the region increased by 9% this year, while there was a nearly 10% increase in the overall number of candidates across the country. As many as 7,70,043 students appeared for the exam in eight regions, including Chennai that covers Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Daman and Diu. Some 62,587 students, including those from 970 schools, took the exam in 430 centres in the region.
There has been a steady increase in the number of students taking the exams each year — from 34,550 in 2006 to 62,587 in 2011 — an 81.15% increase in six years.
Senior principal of Bhavan's Rajaji Vidyashram Ajeeth Prasath Jain said, "This could be because the CBSE syllabus is the base for all-India entrance tests like the AIEEE and AIPMT, which are taken into consideration for admission to the National Institutes of Technology. Deemed universities have also allotted a certain percentage of seats for students clearing these tests." Another reason could be that parents were becoming more aware of the educational and exam reforms introduced by the board over the years.

Fort five-year-old Premlata Agarwal ,Mother of two daughters, became the oldest Indian woman to conquer Mount Everest
Mumbai: Premlata Agarwal became the oldest Indian woman to conquer Mount Everest on Friday, an official said here. Mother of two daughters, one of whom is married, Premlata ascended the world's highest peak at 9.35 am, said a spokesperson for her sponsors.
Fort five-year-old Premlata began her preparations to scale the world's tallest peak on May 6 when she went from the base camp at 18,000 feet to Camp 2 at 22,000 feet.
Then, with the help of artificial oxygen, she reached Camp 3 at 23,000 feet and Camp 4 at 26,000 feet.
She caught some rest on Thursday before embarking on her arduous climb to the summit at 11 pm, and finally reaching there after nearly 11 hours.
Before conquering world's highest peak, Premlata went on a climbing exercise at 20,300-feet-high Island Peak in the Himalayas, besides going up and down the Everest base camps for over a month to acclimatise herself with the tough conditions and regime.
Premlata has now become the first woman from the Marwari community to scale Everest. She has participated in several adventure events like the Karakoram Pass expedition, an ascent on Stok Kangri, and the first Indian women's Thar Desert expedition which involved a 40-day camel safari from Bhuj in Gujarat to Attari in Punjab.

Mobile phones and computers with wireless internet connections pose a risk to human health and should be immediately banned in schools
Mobile phones and computers with wireless internet connections pose a risk to human health and should be immediately banned in schools, a powerful European body has ruled. A Council of Europe committee examined evidence that the technologies have "potentially harmful" effects on humans, and concluded that immediate action was required to protect children, the Daily Telegraph reported.
In its report, the committee said it was crucial to avoid repeating the mistakes made when health officials were slow to recognise the dangers of asbestos, smoking, and lead in petrol.
The report also highlighted the potential health risks of cordless telephones and baby monitors, which rely on similar technology and are widely used. Fears have been raised that electromagnetic radiation emitted by the wireless devices can cause cancers and harm developing brains.
Experts are divided on the issue. Les Barclay, the vice-chairman of the Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research Programme , said: "There is very little evidence for harmful effects. The powers that mobile phones emit are getting less and less."
Paul Elliot of Imperial College London, who is leading a study on the effects of mobile phone use, said: "There are questions about whether mobile phones might have cognitive effects and affect sleep."
Pay your commercial taxes anytime, anywhere online through e-remittances from six banks - SBI, SBM, SBH, Syndicate Bank, Canara Bank and Union Bank of India, without physically approaching an office of the Commercial Taxes Department in Karnataka
Karnataka today became the first State in the country to launch an e-payment system for commercial tax payers.
Speaking at the launch, Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor Shyamala Gopinath wanted such a system to be adopted by other States.
The system enables dealers to remit their commercial taxes anytime, anywhere, without physically approaching an office of the Commercial Taxes Department (CTD).

Right now, e-remittances can be made from six banks - SBI, SBM, SBH, Syndicate Bank, Canara Bank and Union Bank of India.
Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said more public sector banks would be added to the list going forward. He said the system would also help curb tax evasion.
Mr. Gopinath launched the reconciliation portal of the CTD.
Commercial Taxes Department officials said the new model was a “comprehensive e-payment reconciliation system” that would “run seamlessly from the dealer up to the government treasury”.
The CTD collects more than Rs 2,000 crore per month and till now, these collections were by way of cheques by the dealers.
Every month on average, more than one lakh cheques were received by various offices of the CTD and these are then sent to the agency bank, which in turn processed them and remitted to the government account.
This involved a huge amount of manual work and at the same time, delay in realisations of amount and some cases of bounced cheques also. The reconciliation process was very difficult. Also, dealers were inconvenienced as they had to come to the respective offices and wait in a long queue to remit the tax.

IPL cheerleader Gabriella Pasqualotto fired for blogging on flirtatious cricket players
South African cheerleader Gabriella Pasqualotto has become an internet sensation and a mini-celebrity back home after being kicked out of the IPL for secretly blogging on player behavior in post-match parties. The 22-year-old Gabriella, from Pietermaritzburg, was one of the 40 South African cheerleaders in the IPL and was employed by Mumbai Indians. She reportedly wrote about "flirtatious" and "inappropriate" behavior by the cricketers and even mentioned some of them. South African media reported that her blogs created "privacy concerns" for the players.
Gabriella told the press she believed many cheerleaders had intimate relations with cricketers and accused her employers of being "hypocritical". Reports suggest she was sacked after a cricketer and another cheerleader complained to the IPL chairperson.
"On Tuesday last week I was sent home as if I was a criminal. I was treated as if I had taken drugs or done something awful and I was never offered an opportunity to give my side of the story," Gabriella told the Witness. "It's a joke. There are cameras everywhere at these after-parties watching what they (the players) got up to. The guys treated us like pieces of meat. We couldn't go anywhere without the crowds mobbing us and many of the girls did not behave. But nothing I wrote was directed at any one person. I think the cricketers who complained had a guilty conscience."

We couldn't go anywhere without the crowds mobbing us and many of the girls did not behave. But nothing I wrote was directed at any one person. I think the cricketers who complained had a guilty conscience."
Gabriella initially began to tweet comments about her experiences at the after-parties, and was then approached by a website to write a blog. After two posts created a sensation, she was sacked.
One of her posts stated, "We are practically like walking porn. These cricketers are the most loose and mischievous I have come across. I have a long while still here, so I must remember my tip list: beware of the cricketers!"
Already, support for Pasqualotto has been gathering steam on Twitter, forcing Cricket South Africa media officer Michael Owen-Smith to state that SA cricketers were expected to adhere to the board's code of conduct.
Another post which she was forced to remove states: "The men see your face, then your b***s, then your a**, then your b***s again, Ol' Graeme Smith will flirt with anyone while his girlfriend walks behind him. The Australian cricketers are naughty, a certain someone played kissing catches with three girls. He told them, 'Come to my room, I want to cuddle'."
However, she was all praise for a few Indian players: "The few Indian players we have met, such as MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma have been very polite and keep to themselves in the dark corners.
"Hotshots like Tendulkar with families at home are never present. The likes of Jonty Rhodes and Albie Morkel are notorious for having a good time with friends!"
Pasqualotto, who lost a month's earnings, around 8000 rand, now says, "People think you are like handmaidens to the cricket gods, and I'm thrown out for a silly blog." Graeme Smith's agent Craig Livingstone refused to comment.

As India grapples with a major public health problem, being home to an estimated 50.8 million diabetic population, the largest in the world, experts say "consuming a few almonds daily can help combat the lifestyle disease."
"Eating almonds has a positive effect on reducing low density cholesterol and also improves insulin sensitivity; so it does help in pushing diabetes away," says Ritesh Gupta, head of clinical operation at Fortis C-Doc Hospital.
"It is a healthy source of fibre, protein and calories and has been found to have a positive effect in reducing bad cholesterol and improved insulin sensitivity," Gupta told.
Diabetes is caused when there is deficiency of insulin hormone, which controls blood sugar level. Its symptoms include fatigue, excessive thirst and frequent urination."Eating almonds has a positive effect on reducing low density cholesterol and also improves insulin sensitivity; so it does help in pushing diabetes away," says Ritesh Gupta, head of clinical operation at Fortis C-Doc Hospital.
"It is a healthy source of fibre, protein and calories and has been found to have a positive effect in reducing bad cholesterol and improved insulin sensitivity," Gupta told.
"With an estimated 50.8 million people living with the disease, India has the world's largest population of diabetics in the world, followed by China with 43.2 million," says the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The number in India is expected to go up to 87 million - 8.4 per cent of the country's adult population - by 2030.
With India staring at a major public health threat due to diabetes and other lifestyle diseases, almond is now being hailed as the health nut.
"Indians are more prone to lifestyle diseases like diabetes. The increasingly sedentary lifestyle and fast food double up the risk. Almond, which has traditionally been part of our diet, is a high source of nutrition and helps push these diseases away," says Anoop Misra, director of Diabetes Foundation (India).
"A handful of almonds contain 164 calories and 7 gm of protein, which helps in fighting hunger pangs and helps you control what you eat. Almonds also help growing children in developing strong bones," he adds.
A study done by scholars from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, West Chester University, Pennsylvania, and Loma Linda University of California, all in the US, and published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition also confirms that the nut can control diabetes if consumed regularly.
"A diet consisting of 20 per cent of calories as almonds over a 16-week period is effective in improving markers of insulin sensitivity and yields clinically significant improvements in LDL-C (low density lipoprotein cholesterol) in adults with pre-diabetes," the study said.
"We have made great strides in chronic disease research, from evidence of effective treatment to evidence of effective prevention," said Michelle Wien, assistant research professor in nutrition at Loma Linda University's School of Public Health.
She was also the principal investigator for the study, which was conducted at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
"Low density cholesterol is the cholesterol which blocks the arteries. According to the study, the intake of almonds had a significant effect on reducing the levels, along with improving insulin sensitivity," said Karen Lapsley, chief scientific officer of the Almond Board of California, which was an associate in the study.
"It's also very easy to consume, one can have it any time, so it merges well with the hectic lifestyle," Lapsley said.
Gupta, however, adds that indiscreet consumption of almonds alone will not help and it should be seen as a percentage of total calorie intakes.
"It is not that one can eat anything and pop five almonds. It has to be seen as a percentage of total calorie intakes. The rest of the diet is as important," he added.

Investment under Section 80C to save tax : PF & VPF, PPF, NSC, ELSS, Life insurance premiums, Home loan,Stamp duty, registration charges, Fixed deposits (FDs) and Interest paid on education loan
To encourage savings, the government gives tax breaks on certain financial products under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act. The section helps you save taxes on investments up to 1 lakh - if you are in the highest tax bracket of 30%, you can save Rs 30,000 in taxes. Here are the options available under the section:
PF & VPF: Provident Fund (PF) is deducted from your salary. Your employer also contributes to it. While the employer's contribution is exempt from tax, your contribution is counted as investment under Section 80C. You can also contribute additional amounts to Voluntary PF (VPF). The EPFO has announced a 9.5% rate of return on deposits for 2010-2011. Also, the interest earned on the investments is tax-free.
Public Provident Fund (PPF): A PPF account can be opened with a nationalised bank or a post office. The rate of interest earned is 8%, which is tax-free, and the maturity period is 15 years. The minimum required contribution is Rs 500 per year and the maximum allowed is Rs 70,000.
National Savings Certificate (NSC): This is small-savings instrument for a period of six years. The rate of interest is 8%, compounded half-yearly. The interest accrued every year is liable to tax, but the interest earned is also deemed to be reinvested and, thus, eligible for tax deduction.
Equity Linked Savings Scheme (ELSS): ELSS schemes are tax-saving mutual funds. The returns are not guaranteed, since an ELSS invests in equities. The money invested is locked in for three years.
Life insurance premiums: Any amount you pay towards life insurance premium for yourself, your spouse or your children can be included for tax deduction. If you are paying premiums for more than one insurance policy, all the premiums can be included. Besides, investments in unit-linked insurance plans (Ulips), which offer life insurance with investment benefits, are also eligible for tax deduction.
Home loan: Your home loan EMI has two components - the principal and the interest. The principal component qualifies for deduction under Section 80C.
Stamp duty, registration charges: The amount you pay as stamp duty when you buy a house, and the amount you pay for registration of the house documents can be claimed as deduction under Section 80C. However, this can be done only in the year of purchase of the house.
Fixed deposits (FDs): Tax-saving fixed deposits (FDs) of scheduled banks with a tenure of five years are entitled for tax deduction.
Others: Expenses on children's education can be claimed as deduction under Section 80C. However, you need receipts to claim the benefit.
